両生類の皮膚からエイズ特効薬
今日の医学ニュースで、ウイルスの膜に作用してHIV感染を防ぐ物質について紹介していますが、この研究を実施したバンダービルト大学のDerya Unutmaz助教授は以下のような研究も実施しています。

様々な両生類の皮膚から得られた14種類のペプチドの抗HIV作用を調べた報告です。
これらのペプチドのうちの3つはT細胞へのHIV感染を完全にブロックし、しかも樹状細胞に隠れているHIVウイルスを破壊する作用がありました。
以前、
カエルを含めた両生類が地球上から姿を消しつつあるという記事を紹介しましたが、
Unutmaz助教授の研究成果から、両生類が減るということは、HIVなどの治療が難しい病気の特効薬が生まれる可能性を狭めているのだということがよくわかります。
両生類に限らず、天然の生き物や植物は我々人間が病気と戦う時の武器となりえます。
アメリカを代表する民族植物学者 マーク・プロトキン氏は、著書「メディシン・クエスト」の最後をこう締めくくっています。
「（天然の動植物）と共存し、彼等から恩恵を受ける方法を探す作業は、美的な吸引力には欠けるけれども、われわれ自身の利益のために、言葉につくせないほど大切な仕事だ。
われわれとこの惑星を共用している生き物たちとの関係を、もっとうまくこなせたら、きっと明るい未来がくる。」
今回紹介したUnutmaz助教授の研究成果などを大々的にプレスがとりあげたりすると、天然の動植物がいかに人類の健康に大事かを大衆も認識するようになるでしょう。
ただし、ただでさえ科学記事が貧弱な日本のメディアが、今回のような研究成果を自ら取り上げるとは考えにくいのです。
なので、力をもった環境保護団体等は、自然が持つ偉大な力を端的に表す研究成果を掲載するように大手メディアに対してプッシュすることも必要だと思います。
そういった知的に洗練された圧力やロビー活動は、長期的な視点で非常に有用な筈です。
